Isolation is described as the experience of being separated from others, which may result from one of two situations: when one is physically removed from others such as when a person resides in a remote area or when the client is emotionally removed from a community, such as when one feels socially isolated from others. When an individual experiences either of these two scenarios, he or she is likely to develop intense feelings of social anxiety, loneliness, helplessness, and/or depression, among other serious mental health conditions. An isolation therapist is able to provide the opportunity to establish trust with others and experience the emotional support of another person, which help clients live a more fulfilling and less isolated existence.
Therapy helps to address and treat the psychological and emotional issues that lead to isolation. In some cases, isolation is not a choice; many sufferers desire friendship and to be able to engage emotionally, but struggle to do so out of fear, reluctance of being rejected, or simply because they do not know how to proceed. Additionally, many people are challenged with isolation during major life changes, such as losing a close confidant or intimate partner, while others are have moved to remote regions, leaving behind their friends and family members. Regardless of the circumstance, feelings of isolation can be severely troubling. An isolation therapist is able to help clients develop or improve their social skills, find new ways to make friends, and learn to manage symptoms.
