Honolulu’s Drug Problem: Trouble in Paradise

In 2013, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) estimated that 30,000 Hawaii residents over the age of 12 had abused drugs or were dependent on them in the year previously. In that same study, 86,000 Hawaiians over 12 had abused alcohol or were dependent on them in the previous year. Those numbers have come from a steady rise in drug use over the past few years. In a White House report from 2010, marijuana was the most commonly-cited drug by people entering state-run treatment centers, followed very closely by methamphetamines.

In Honolulu, drugs and alcohol use are a concern for the residents there. The Honolulu Police Department reported that in 2013, 923 adults were arrested on drug-related offences, while 426 people were arrest for alcohol-related incidents. In local-level SAMHSA estimates from 2013, Honolulu’s numbers reveal mixed results. While 8.4 percent of residents used illicit drugs in the past month (the lowest in the state), 3.5 percent of Honolulu residents used some type of illicit drug other than marijuana (the highest in the state). Honolulu also had the highest percentage in the state for people will an illicit drug dependence in the past year, with 1.5 percent of the population estimated to have had a problem.

Honolulu had the second highest percentage of binge drinkers in the previous month at 22.5 percent, as well as the second highest percentage of alcohol use in the previous month for residents between ages 12 and 20 with nearly 22.9 percent. While Honolulu had the lowest percentage of people who needed but weren’t receiving treatment at just under 7.1 percent, the city did have the highest percentage of people who needed but weren’t receiving treatment for illicit drug use in the previous year at nearly 2.1 percent.

A number of people don’t get treatment for their drug or alcohol abuse because they don’t know where to go to get treatment, or feel that there’s too much information out there. What are Your Options for Honolulu Addiction Treatment?

When you make the courageous decision to enter treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction, you may have numerous questions about what kind of treatment you need and what the process is like. Fortunately, your treatment plan will be one-of-a-kind and based on a number of factors, including your past history with drugs or alcohol as well as your physical and mental health. When you enter treatment, you’ll either go into inpatient or outpatient treatment depending on your level of addiction. Learn more about these treatments below:

Inpatient Treatment

If you have a severe addiction that requires you to remove yourself from your place of residence in order to focus on recovery, inpatient treatment should be your choice, as it usually takes place in clinics or in residential facilities. Some of the steps you’ll take in inpatient treatment include:

    • Evaluation: As you enter a Honolulu rehab facility, you’ll first get a checkup from the nurses and other medical staff. They will ask you about your addiction, what kind of past usage you’ve had, and if you’ve had any health issues. It’s vital that you answer as openly as you can, as your treatment plan will be adjusted based on your level of addiction. The staff will also evaluate your mental state to see if you have any co-occurring disorders.
    • Detoxification: For many people, usage of drugs or alcohol over the long-term has made them develop a dependency on drugs or alcohol in order to stave off withdrawal symptoms or to feel like they can function. The detox process is designed to help wean you off of drugs or alcohol so that your body can heal from the dependency. Withdrawal symptoms can sometimes occur with abrupt stoppage of drugs or alcohol, which can be treated with medication in order to make the process faster and more comfortable for you. In most cases, detox takes from 2 to 7 days to complete.
    • Rehab: After detox, entering into a rehabilitation facility is the next step in the process. In rehab, you’ll start sessions with a licensed therapist as well as meet with groups, have a chance to work on your physical fitness, explore alternative therapies, and more. Using evidence-based methods, you can begin to explore the psychological aspects of your addiction in individual therapy. In private, you can talk openly about you addiction, discover the kinds of thoughts and actions that can cause you to be triggered, and learn how to avoid those triggers. With a group, you can have a space to share with others who are also in recovery, and have a chance to support others in their journey.
    • Aftercare: When you've completed rehab – which can last from 28 to 90 days or more – aftercare programs are available to offer you support. You can continue to see your therapist and meet with your support group as you return to school or work duties. Other aftercare programs include education opportunities, group-sponsored events, regular drug testing, sober housing, and much more.

Outpatient Treatment

If you have a milder addiction, or if you’re entering into aftercare, then outpatient treatment can be scheduled around your work or school commitments. Counseling, group support, and other relapse prevention programs are available.
