Atlanta: At the Heart of Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the South

In 2013, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) estimated that 7.7 million Americans living in the south were dependent on or were abusing drugs or alcohol in the year previously. 589,000 of those Southerners were living in Georgia. In that same year, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) studied drug abuse trends in the Atlanta area, particularly admittance numbers at publically-funded treatment centers, and found some disturbing numbers about the drugs that were commonly cited:

    • Alcohol topped the list at almost 47 percent of admissions
    • Marijuana came in second at 16 percent of admissions
    • Cocaine was next at 9.6 percent of total admissions
    • Methamphetamine accounted for 7.5 percent of admissions
    • Heroin accounted for 6.1 percent of admissions
    • Oxycodone accounted for 3.1 percent of admissions
    • Alprazolam accounted for 1.2 percent of admissions

NIDA’s report also cites the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) as indication that, “Georgia is both a final destination point for drug shipments and a smuggling corridor for drugs transported along the east coast. Extensive interstate highway, rail, and bus transportation networks, as well as international, regional, and private air and marine ports of entry, serve the State.” They go on to suggest that Georgia’s route along the I-95 that connects Miami to New York City makes is a major drug transportation hub.

With alcohol being such a commonly-cited drug for admissions, it should be no surprise that it’s the most commonly cited drug at the Georgia Crisis and Access Line, with a total of 10,006 calls being made, according to NIDA’s report. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reported that 277 of the state’s motor fatalities were alcohol-related.
